The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is taking action to help babies live past their first birthday and stay healthy. Infant deaths happen for many reasons. That’s why MSDH is working with doctors, hospitals, and communities across Mississippi to protect moms and babies.

WIC & Nutrition Assistance

Early Intervention (First Steps)

Free services for infants and children under 3 with health conditions or developmental delays. 

MSDH Home Visiting (MIECHV)

Offers in-home support from early childhood specialists in selected counties.

Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT)

EPSDT offers free screenings and preventive care for Medicaid-eligible children under 21. 

Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI)

Hearing loss affects 2 in every 1,000 healthy babies born, and 1 in every 100 infants who are born premature or treated in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). 

Healthy Start (Northeast Mississippi)

Aims to improve pregnancy health and early life for infants. (Available at no cost in Northeast Mississippi: Chickasaw, Clay, Lee, Lowndes, Monroe and Prentiss counties.)
